The Color Atlas of Periodontology was first published in German as Parodontologie in 1984, then in English from 1985. Unlike classic textbooks organized around text, this work makes the opposite bet: building the discipline's teaching primarily around clinical photographs and diagrams, with deliberately concise text.

Author

Klaus H. Rateitschak, a Swiss periodontist (University of Basel), is its principal author; later editions were co-written with Edith M. Rateitschak-Pluss and Herbert F. Wolf.

Content and approach

The atlas documents the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases through highly detailed clinical photographs, accompanied by explanatory diagrams. Successive editions also incorporate the oral manifestations of systemic diseases (diabetes, HIV, Down syndrome), modern diagnostic tests, and advanced surgical techniques, including guided tissue regeneration.

Reach and influence

It is described in the literature as the "pre-eminent work" in the field — a rare distinction for a book organized around imagery rather than text. Its pedagogical value comes precisely from this approach: recognizing a clinical presentation through direct visual comparison is often faster and more reliable in practice than a textual description, however precise.
